Check the requirement that applies to your channel
Reviewed on 27 September 2026: YouTube lists an ad-revenue route of 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours over 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. Other earning features have different requirements and availability. See the official monetization feature requirements. YouTube has announced program changes beginning 1 February 2027, so recheck the current rules before setting a target.
Public counters and eligibility counters differ
The Partner Program eligibility guide distinguishes qualifying activity from total activity. Shorts Feed watch time does not contribute to the long-form watch-hour requirement. Watch time from private, unlisted or deleted videos and ad campaigns is excluded from that threshold. The Earn section is the appropriate place to check your progress; reaching a threshold does not automatically approve a channel.
A watch-time example
Imagine a ten-minute tutorial receives 1,200 views with an average viewing duration of three minutes. Multiplying those illustrative values gives 3,600 minutes, or 60 hours. That estimates watch time for this example; it does not establish that all 60 hours qualify for the Partner Program. Confirm the relevant activity in Studio instead of using a public counter to calculate eligibility.
Now imagine the same video has 1,200 views but an average duration of one minute. The comparable estimate becomes 20 hours. Improving the usefulness and clarity of the tutorial may therefore matter more than increasing its displayed view count. Neither example forecasts earnings.
Purchased activity is not an eligibility shortcut
YouTube's fake engagement policy prohibits artificial inflation of engagement and explains that artificial traffic may be excluded. Do not buy counts expecting monetization approval or describe supplier delivery as qualified watch time. A service status and YouTube's eligibility assessment are separate systems.
Use a weekly review routine
- Record the date and the requirements displayed in Earn.
- Review comparable videos in Analytics using the same reporting window.
- Look for opening sections where viewers stop watching and check whether the title matches the content.
- Choose one improvement: a faster demonstration, a clearer example, or removal of an unnecessary introduction.
- Track the next few uploads before deciding whether the change helped.
Keep a private record of your observations and preserve the distinction between channel performance and application status. A sensible creator plan combines original content, audience feedback and current policy requirements. Avoid forecasting income from subscriber count alone; revenue depends on monetized activity and the terms that apply to the account.
